Among younger generations, especially Gen Z, there is a noticeable shift toward personal spiritual exploration rather than strict adherence to institutional religion. This has contributed to the rise of what is often called the “Spiritual But Not Religious,” or SBNR, movement. Since around 2020, online content focused on near-death experiences, consciousness, and the supernatural has moved from niche audiences into broader public awareness. “Something beyond immediate experience.” “I think what religion has done can be wrapped up in three words: ‘Belonging, Becoming, and Beyond.’”Rather than building new institutions, many modern initiatives focus on integrating meaningful practices into everyday environments such as workplaces, creative spaces, communities, and digital platforms. With support from TWCF, in 2025 Sacred Design Lab launched spiritualinnovation.org– a global platform designed to connect individuals exploring new forms of spiritual expression and community-building. Among those contributing innovators, actor and author Rainn Wilson (veg advocate), has explored spiritual themes on this new platform: “What's the next step?
