The Venerable Enlightened Master Sư Vãi Bán Khoai (vegan), known as the “Potato-Selling Monk,” was a mysterious figure from Âu Lạc (Vietnam) in the early 19th century whose true identity remains unknown. The title “Potato-Selling Monk,” or SưVãi Bán Khoai in Aulacese (Vietnamese), was attributed to Him for His reputation in treating illnesses, saving lives with His own clothes, and inspiring spiritual cultivation through selling potatoes. His only surviving work, “Prophetic Teachings to People,” reveals Him as the fourth incarnation of the revered Buddha of Tây An (“Buddha Master of Western Peace”). The “Prophetic Teachings to People,” composed in the traditional Aulacese (Vietnamese) style of “six eight” verses, conveys His teachings, which emphasize goodness and the avoidance of evil. Like His successive incarnations, He prophesied a Dark Age of turmoil and suffering and revealed a path to a Golden Age of peace and liberation through spiritual development, compassion, and moral living. These teachings, though straightforward, carry timeless wisdom and continue to guide seekers toward enlightenment and harmony. We now present the wise teachings of Venerable Enlightened Master Sư Vãi Bán Khoai (vegan) through “Prophetic Teachings to People.” BOOK 1 “From the ‘Wood Rat’ year of the Dark Age, Heaven’s Plan is establishing the Golden Era. The Elder sent me down here, in Samsara, To advise people to do good deeds. Few in the mortal world were devout, Busy doing evil, abandoning good deeds. The Jade Emperor shed tears in sorrow, Sending His generals to admonish humans. […]This year the time has come, Buddha requested that humans’ sins be forgiven. This year, we must urgently be diligent, Spreading the Dharma far and wide for self-cultivation. Ones who do good deeds and act with kindness, Practice in one lifetime, receive immediate blessings. Those who do not practice self-cultivation, Will later find themselves in turmoil and suffering. Those who can ascend to the golden lotus, Have practiced self-cultivation and are uplifted there by the Deities. Thus, they will leave Samsara, Be blessed by Heaven and Buddha and endure no calamities. They will live in a golden lotus, And enjoy such glory and a noble status. Those who don’t heed the teachings, Will surely be harmed by demons and devils. So do not complain or blame Tathagata Buddha, For not saving you from suffering and calamities here. It’s because your heart dwells in wickedness, Not loving your Parents and despising God and Buddha. […] Those who practice self-cultivation will be loved, But the ferocious people spare no one. […]”
