Here is a tip for repelling mosquitoes and other insects naturally without harming them. Several essential oils can help, each with its own benefits. Citronella provides short-term protection in sprays or lotions, while candles and diffusers can reduce mosquito activity outdoors. A few drops of clove oil in a neutral carrier oil is one of the most potent natural repellents, providing protection for up to three hours when applied to exposed skin or clothing. A few drops in an outdoor oil burner can also help. Oil of lemon eucalyptus can provide four to six hours of protection, depending on concentration. Lavender bush contains natural insect-repelling compounds. Plant it around patios for ongoing deterrence or crush the flowers and rub them on pulse points for short-term protection. Peppermint can be used in properly diluted sprays, commercial repellents or diffusers, and on outdoor cushions and camping equipment. For a simple outdoor spray, dilute a few drops of citronella, lavender or peppermint essential oil in water with a suitable emulsifier, such as a small amount of mild liquid soap and spray around outdoor seating areas. A little goes a long way, and combining methods can provide added protection. Please note that with all essential oil mixtures, do not spray them directly on your face, and wash your hands after application to avoid getting any in your eyes.
