American hockey player Billy Garaffa shares how his heart stopped for 16 minutes during a 2022 game. During a hockey game, Billy did something unprecedented for him— praying with his teammates right on the ice—moments before a transformative event unfolded. During the game, his heart went into ventricular fibrillation, and he collapsed on the ice. Doctors say Billy was legally dead for 16 minutes.
I was on the ice. I don’t really remember much, but I do know that my heart went into V-fib [life-threatening heart rhythm] and I just collapsed on the ice. But to me, I never felt like I died because I was standing in the Light. I was standing with God, and I felt more alive than I ever had before. When I say that, that felt more real than this right now. It did.
Billy saw a bubble and clearly perceived God and the Holy Spirit. God spoke to him about the two most important commandments. I felt God speaking to me, and He was telling me the two most important commandments. He asked me, “What did Jesus say about the most important commandment?” And that was to love your God with all your mind, all your soul, and all your heart, love your neighbor as yourself. When He said that, everything absolutely made sense. It made everything so simple, but yet we make it so hard sometimes.
And then I felt the Holy Spirit on my shoulder, just leading me back to where the bubble was, just outside the Light. As I walked, this amazing Light, which I can’t even describe to anybody, because it would be like trying to describe the color blue to a blind man that’s never seen. When I was walking back, the shadow just dropped away, and the bubble illuminated. I knew it was the Holy Spirit without a doubt, leading me back to my body. When I saw my body, I didn’t even recognize it was me because nothing else mattered at that moment, but when I recognized it was me, that’s when I woke up.
After waking up, Billy grappled with why he had seen God and the Holy Spirit but not Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian), especially since many people who’ve had similar experiences report seeing Him. Billy prayed to Lord Jesus Christ and asked where He was. Later, during his morning prayer time, God gave him a vision.
I woke up, I was just lying in bed, you know how you kind of sit there and dream a little. God really brought me back to that moment. When I was sitting there looking at the bubble, I could see through the bubble, and I saw Jesus in the bubble, standing and kneeling around my body and really guiding all the people doing all the right things to bring me back to life. The people that were doing the AED [Automated External Defibrillator] on me, the people doing the CPR [Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation] on me—He was there. He came through that bubble, and He was next to me to save my life because all my wife could pray at that moment was the name Jesus. Without Jesus, I wouldn’t be here today.
Billy’s experience left him with absolute certainty about his faith and a message for others seeking truth. Without a doubt, I know that He is. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and I pray, Lord, that You— if you seek Him, you will find Him. Guaranteed. (Fox News)
