Previously, in Part 1 of 2 of Robert Kopecky’s near-death experiences, Robert described two early brushes with death. The first came after a car crash in Los Angeles [US], where he found himself outside his body, guided by a loving presence into a peaceful, pastoral realm. Years later, during a period of heavy substance use in New York, he collapsed at home and entered a brilliant white cloud, where he was shown scenes from his life and the importance of each moment.
I came back to consciousness just slowly. I started to hear my girlfriend’s voice kind of cutting through this experience, and the cloud closed back up and started to fade out, and the details of the room came back into my vision, and there I was, laying on the floor.
Robert’s third near-death experience occurred some years later. He was in Arizona, in a college town, watching the Super Bowl with friends at a restaurant bar. After the game, he went outside to call his fiancée on a pay phone. A large, inebriated punk kid started getting aggressive with him while he was talking on the phone. The kid hung up the phone while Robert was talking. When the kid pushed him hard a final time, Robert, who had grown up studying martial arts, punched him on the chin and knocked him out. Robert then left on his bicycle to head back to his fiancée’s.
I didn’t realize that there were a van full of these skinheads that had witnessed me punch their friend, and they pulled up alongside of me and hit me in the back of the head with a crowbar or something. And I was knocked off my bicycle, head first, into the street. The next thing I knew, I was in a space that was kind of womblike, or kind of subterranean in feeling, not as bright as the previous places. And there were entities around me that were benevolent, loving. I again had this sense of being in the right place, being taken care of and wrapped in love, so to speak, and happy to be where I was. But I also had this sense of something going on outside of this space, something bad going on. According to the police report, Robert was being kicked and beaten by the group of skinheads while he was unconscious.
In this place, where I was safe, and I had these entities around me, they were telling me that I had to go back, that I couldn’t stay, and I wanted desperately, at that point, to stay. Maybe it was because it was my third near-death experience, and I was ready to be done with the difficulties of this life. But basically, as I recall it, they kind of picked me up, and I remember just, like, having a lot of hands underneath me, and they pushed me. It seemed like they pushed me through a membrane, kind of, and I popped through. I opened my eyes, and I was laying on my back on the street, with an emergency medical technician over me, who said, “He’s back!”
Robert stashed that experience away, too. His life didn’t really get back on track for quite a while, until a couple of years later, when he was in New York during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and had what he describes as an extrasensory experience with spiritual entities all around him. He later got a small place out of town and developed a meditation practice by the river. In meditation, the memories of his three near-death experiences returned.
I had this gift of spiritual perspective, so to speak, from that first one. From the second one, then, I had that experience of these boxes of time from my past being shown to me, just like when I lived them, and the realization that this is where we make our karma. This is where we decide what we’re going to do, who we’re going to be. So that presence allowed me, then, to sort of deal with people and deal with life in a completely different way because I was able to be more focused on this moment and what this moment might mean to somebody. Couldn’t see what was important that I had to do. But afterwards, I started to realize that everybody’s life is important. That we all live out these big circles of being. You know, you start out in a certain place, and all these things happen to you, and you have to come back around and finish them. You have to reconnect. And it may not be like a superhero tale. It may be fairly pedestrian and all, but it’s not to the people in your life or to you. (NDE Journey)
