Today we are going to present a heart-warming Korean film about a loving grandfather and his two grandchildren called “Stand By Me.” As the lovely conversation unfolds between grandpa and grandson, we are introduced to Deok-Hee, Deok-Goo’s five-year-old sister. The three of them are walking home through the field with their little white dog-people, engaged in lively chatter and laughter. It feels peaceful and carefree, embodying the ideal country life that most of us envision. However, soon we will see the tough side of life that this family must confront.

Our hearts melt when we see the old grandpa hurry out to pick up Deok-Hee from kindergarten after washing almost thirty dirty and greasy grills for only a few dollars. It turns out that the little girl suffers from reactive attachment disorder and talks like a three-year-old. Both Deok-Goo and Deok-Hee suffer deeply from losing their father and miss their mother terribly. Grandpa never explains why he sent their mother away, but when Deok-Goo hears from the other kids in school that Vanessa left with their father’s insurance money, he feels so hurt and frustrated. Grandpa doesn’t show any surprise when told that he has lung cancer. However, he does listen to the doctor’s advice about the kids needing their mother and starts the search for Vanessa. Simple yet beautiful, this 2018 Korean drama tells a touching and resonating story of a grandfather’s unconditional love for his grandchildren. It shows a family’s resilience in difficult times and how forgiveness and reconciliation can bring everyone back together.
